Protamine is a mixture of strongly basic peptides, isolated from the milt (sperm) of certain wild salmon species through extraction with mineral acids. It is used as an API in hematology, intensive care, and cardiovascular surgery as an injection to counteract the effects of heparin. Additionally, it serves as a pharmaceutical excipient in combination with zinc ions and insulin to delay onset of action or prolong the duration of effect.
