Arbutin is a chemical compound that naturally occurs in certain plants (e.g., bearberry) as β-Arbutin or is synthetically produced as α-Arbutin. Arbutin acts on pigment-producing skin cells by inhibiting melanin synthesis. Its effect is based on the inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase. Therefore, it is mainly used in cosmetics for skin lightening, reducing hyperpigmentation, melasma, and regulating melanin production.
